Are your doors and phone lines being hammered by sales pitches and scare tactics? Don’t be rushed, you still have some time to weigh your options. The biggest mistake would be making the leap to an electronic medical records system that doesn’t fit your needs. You can still qualify for the full EHR incentives if you begin your transition in 2012. However, you must establish e-prescription within your practice over the next few months. The dirty little secret is that failure to initiate the eRx program between January 1, 2011 and June 30, 2011 will result in a 1% reduction in Medicare reimbursements in 2012. Currently, CMs will penalize those providers who do not produce at least 10 claims-based G-codes representing electronically prescribed medications from your practice prior to June 30, 2010. If you need to slow things down to make the transitions, remember you cannot collect on both eRx and EHR in the same year anyway. But you can be penalized in 2012 by failure to implement an eRx system by June 30, 2011! You will need a plan to methodically steer clear of eRx penalties and then engage EMR incentives starting in 2012. Hence, focusing on establishing a means to e-prescribe by May, then tackling the bigger transition to EHR for 2012. Medicare’s Electronic Prescribing Incentive
